How to Get to Alexandria ✈️🚆

Getting to Alexandria is easy, whether you're starting your journey in Cairo or other cities in Egypt. If you're arriving internationally, the best option is to fly into Cairo or another major Egyptian city like Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, or Luxor. Use WayAway to search for the best flight options from anywhere in the world to Egypt's main cities. Plus, with my WayAway Plus membership code TP-385219, you can enjoy 10% off your membership for additional savings on flights and more! 🎉💰

Once you're in Egypt, here’s how you can reach Alexandria:

From Cairo 🚄

If you're coming from Cairo, the most convenient way to reach Alexandria is by train. You’ll find regular daily services between the two cities, with trains running from 06:00 to 22:30. There are two classes available—First and Second Class—and I recommend opting for an express train that doesn’t make any stops for a quicker journey. The journey takes about 2.5 hours if you choose a non-stop train and around 3.5 hours with intermediate stops.

It’s best to buy your ticket the day before to avoid any last-minute chaos. When arriving in Alexandria, remember there are two main stations—Sidi Gaber Station if you're heading east, or Misr Station for the city centre. 🏙️🚉

For a hassle-free experience, consider booking a private tour to Alexandria from Cairo, which often includes transportation and sightseeing. 🗺️✨ Viator and GetYourGuide are both excellent platforms where you can find a variety of tailored tours, from historical explorations to culinary adventures. These tours typically cover key attractions and allow you to enjoy the journey without the stress of logistics, ensuring you make the most of your day in Alexandria!

Alternatively, there are several bus companies that run services from Cairo to Alexandria. Companies like Go BusBlue BusWest Delta, and Super Jet offer frequent trips, with services operating from 05:00 to 23:00. However, be mindful that bus stations in Alexandria may not be centrally located, so plan accordingly. 🚌💨

Though not as common, you can also fly from Cairo to Alexandria. Domestic flights take around 45 minutes, but keep in mind that Borg El Arab International Airport is about 40 km from the city centre. If you need flexibility, private taxisor car rentals are available, but driving in Egypt can be quite the adventure! 🚕🛣️

💡 Disclaimer: While renting a car in Egypt may seem like a convenient option, I do not recommend it due to the hectic driving conditions and traffic in the country. Navigating through crowded streets and understanding local driving customs can be quite challenging for visitors. However, if you prefer to rent a car for your travels, you can do so through DiscoverCars, which offers a variety of rental options across Egypt.

From Other Cities in Egypt 🌍

If you're exploring Egypt beyond Cairo, Alexandria is accessible from various cities by train, bus, or domestic flights.

  • From Luxor or Aswan: Trains are available, although the journey is quite long, especially from Aswan, so it's best for those seeking a scenic trip across Egypt. Buses also connect these cities to Alexandria, but may take considerable time. 🏞️⏳

  • From Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh: Domestic flights are the fastest option. You can check WayAway for flight deals between these cities and Cairo, and then take a train or bus onward to Alexandria. ✈️🏖️

  • From Other Major Cities: For destinations like Suez or Port Said, buses are often the most efficient option. Regular services connect these coastal cities to Alexandria with varied travel times. 🚍🌊

With WayAway, booking flights and planning your adventure in Egypt is simple and affordable, especially with the WayAway Plus membership for extra savings. 🌟💼

How to Move Around Alexandria 🚖🌊

Getting around Alexandria is a breeze, thanks to a variety of convenient transport options available at your fingertips! 🚖✨ Uber and Careem are popular ride-hailing services that are not only affordable but also reliable, allowing you to seamlessly travel between attractions without the hassle of parking or navigating public transport.

If you prefer a more traditional experience, you can opt for a local taxi. However, keep in mind that taxis in Alexandria generally require cash payments, as credit and debit cards are not widely accepted. Be sure to negotiate the fare beforehand or ensure the driver uses the meter to avoid surprises!

For a unique and scenic way to explore the city, hop on the Sightseeing Red Bus. This double-decker bus offers a fantastic opportunity to see key attractions while enjoying the fresh Mediterranean air. With a hop-on, hop-off service, you can visit landmarks at your own pace, making it an ideal choice for those who want to take their time. 🚌🌊

No matter your choice of transport, Alexandria’s vibrant atmosphere and stunning coastal views are sure to make your travels memorable!

Best Time to Visit Alexandria 🌞🌸

The ideal time to explore Alexandria—and Egypt as a whole—is from October to April. However, if you're specifically looking to experience the charm of Alexandria, spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November) are the prime seasons. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities! 🌼🌅

In contrast, summer can be quite scorching, with high temperatures and humidity that may not be comfortable for everyone. Additionally, the winter months bring increased rainfall, which can limit your plans. But if you’re not fussed about the weather, Alexandria can be visited year-round, as each season brings its own unique charm!

Be mindful that mid-summer (particularly June to August) is the high season for tourism, meaning the city can get quite crowded, and accommodation prices will likely be at their peak. If you prefer a quieter experience with better rates, aim for the shoulder seasons! 🌊🏖️

Alexandria offers a rich tapestry of accommodation options to suit every traveler's budget and preference. While many visitors opt for a day tour, if you're planning to immerse yourself in the city's culture and history, finding the right place to stay is essential.

For a touch of opulence, look no further than the stunning hotels along the Corniche. The Four Seasons Hotel provides breathtaking views and top-notch amenities, while the Hilton Alexandria Corniche offers a blend of luxury and comfort. If you prefer a more central location, the historic Steigenberger Cecil Hotel is perfect, with its classic charm and proximity to key attractions. Another fantastic option is the Royal Jewel Al Azhar Hotel, known for its excellent service.

Mid-Range Comfort 🛌

If you're seeking comfort without breaking the bank, consider the Paradise Inn Windsor Palace Hotel or the Romance Alexandria Hotel, both of which combine quality and affordability. The Grand Plaza Hotel also offers great value with its modern facilities and a prime location.

Budget-Friendly Gems 💰

For budget-conscious travellers, Alexander the Great Hotel stands out as one of the cleanest and most welcoming options in the city. Another excellent choice is Pharaohs Hotel, which provides basic yet comfortable accommodations at an affordable price.

Alternative Options 🏡

If you prefer the charm of local life, Alexandria has plenty of Airbnb listings and cozy hostels that cater to various tastes and budgets. Whether you’re looking for a shared space or a private apartment, the options are endless!

To make your booking easy and straightforward, I highly recommend using Booking.com, which I find to be the most reliable platform for accommodations. For those looking for a hostel experience, HostelWorld is a great option. Additionally, you can explore other platforms like AgodaTrivago, or Vrbo for more choices.

No matter where you choose to stay, Alexandria promises a memorable experience, ensuring you’ll enjoy every moment of your adventure! 🌊🌅

What to Wear in Alexandria 👗🌞

Dressing appropriately for Alexandria’s climate and culture can enhance your experience and keep you comfortable throughout your visit. Here are some tips on what to wear while exploring this beautiful Mediterranean city:

  • Lightweight Clothing: Since Alexandria has a warm climate, especially in the summer months, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Loose-fitting clothes will help you stay cool while walking around historical sites.

  • Modesty: While Alexandria is relatively liberal compared to other cities in Egypt, it's still important to dress modestly, particularly when visiting religious sites. For women, it’s a good idea to wear long skirts or loose trousers and tops that cover the shoulders. Men should avoid shorts and wear trousers or long shorts.

  • Comfortable Footwear: You'll likely do a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are essential! Consider wearing sandals or sneakers that provide good support, especially if you plan to explore ancient ruins or the bustling streets.

  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun, along with sunscreen to protect your skin.

  • Layers for Evenings: While daytime temperatures can be warm, evenings might be cooler, especially in spring and autumn. Bring a light jacket or cardigan for the evenings, particularly if you plan to dine outdoors by the sea.

By dressing wisely, you'll be ready to fully enjoy everything Alexandria has to offer while staying comfortable and respectful of the local culture! 🌊
